Celebrating National Black History Month

February 19, 2019

Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the stories and countless contributions by African Americans to our nation’s history. It is a time to rediscover their shaping of American society in so many significant and positive ways. In the face of historical segregation, and oppressive racial discrimination, and the vestiges of prejudice that remain today, African Americans have stood with dignity, faith, and courage, as examples of heroism and patriotism that we revere and honor this month.

The Utah Attorney General’s Office celebrates the diversity of our country and those whose sacrifice, suffering, and indomitable spirits helped break down barriers and build our nation. The story of America is not complete without the sobering tragedies of slavery and segregation nor the soaring accomplishments and successes of the African American community. We recognize African Americans throughout history who forever changed our country because they raised their voices to bring the change they wished to see.

“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
